Grinding Coffee
The rule of coffee grinding is grind only as much as you need for each brew. Keep the rest in whole bean form if you can.

There are two major kinds of grinders: burr grinders and blade grinders. The burr type are better as the beans are ground between two metal or stone plates and the resulting grind is more uniform. These grinders are more expensive though.

The blade type is common, inexpensive and can work well. Prices generally range from $10 to $30.

You must be careful not to over-grind your coffee or it will become a powder. The coarseness of the grind will vary depending on your brewing method. For open pot or French press method, you will need a fairly coarse grind. With filter drip method, your grind can be about the fineness of sugar.

For espresso, you must have a dedicated espresso burr grinder to really make good espresso. The blade grind will be too inconsistent. More about espresso grinding can be found on the Grinding and Tamping Espresso page.
